Ontario Winter Festival Championships
Windsor International Training & Aquatic Centre
February 22-23, 2020

Congratulations to all 17 Warriors who made the long trip to Windsor this weekend to compete in the 2020 Ontario Winter Festival Championships, a provincial level championship meet for ages 13 and under. After 2 days of competition, our team came away with 5 medals, 24 other Top 8 performances and 4 new club records resulting in CW placing 14th out of 74 clubs!

For many of our 11 & Under athletes, this was their first Festival experience. A special congratulations to our AG2 first-timers, Connor Brown (11), Sam Fahmy (10) and Owen Inglis (11) as well as our first-timers from AG3: Claire Qin (10) and Elayna Zunic (10).

A special mention also goes to Sarah Coffin (11) and Elizabeth Coode (12) for their fantastic contribution to rounding out the Girls relay teams and also to Quinlynn Logan (11) for fighting through a recent injury to compete in the relays. We would not have had the girls relay teams without you. Thank you (and your parents) for your commitment in supporting the CW team!

And, of course, we can’t forget the coaches involved in the training and preparation of our athletes for this meet. Lots of love and thanks also to Coaches Connor, Allison, Hayley, Lexi and Russ!

“It was an intense meet for our swimmers, with many of them swimming five to six individual events, on top of four relays, over a span of two days. They each stood up and did well representing their Club and themselves, and I could not be prouder of them,” said Coach Connor. “It was especially exciting to have the relays we did and for each swimmer to have a chance to swim on them.”

Now for the highlights …

Day 1

Our team of 12-13-year-old swimmers showed fantastic form on Saturday in spite of the extra 1-hour long break interrupting the morning sessions due to a medical issue.

Leading the team in scoring was 12-year-old Jessica Dreghici who placed 4th in the 50 Free and then went on to swim the 100 Back in club record-breaking time. Her time of 1:10.05 also qualified her for this event in both the OYJ and OSC championship meets. Jessica then capped her individual swims by taking Silver in the 800 Free, shaving a whopping 34.22s off her PB and smashing a second club record with her time of 9:26.32 while also making the OSC cut in this event.

In the 200 Breast, 8th-seeded Alex Rusu narrowly got edged out of a medal and placed 4th. His time of 2:47.58 earned him a new club record and also his first OYJ qualifying time.

Thirteen-year-old Evan Hodson’s strong 4th place finish in the 800 Free shaved 8.42s off his OYJ-qualified time while his time of 2:10.45 in the 200 Free earned him a PB and an extra OYJ event.

Willow Coburn and Merlyn Dong showed they clearly belonged on the OYJ team with each making the cut in 2 events while also grabbing points for the team. Cameron Morrissey also put himself on the OYJ squad with a strong sub-28s, 50 Free performance.

In the afternoon, Elayna Zunic led CW’s 11 & Under team with impressive swims, placing 8th in the 100 Back and taking home a Bronze medal in the 50 Free. Also racing in the 50 Free was Claire Qin who grabbed 8th place.

Veteran Festival participant, Spencer Pirvu (11) also had a strong start, placing 6th in both the 400 IM and 100 Back.

The Girls 11 & Under Relay Team with Claire, Elayna, Sarah and Quin wowed the crowd with two Top 8 placings, coming 5th in the 4x100 Medley and 7th in the 4x50 Free Relay.

At the other end of the facility, the Boys 12-13 Relay Team also had good results, placing 9th & 8th in the 4x100 Medley and 4x50 Free, respectively. Well done Alex, Cameron, Dylan, Evan and Merlyn!

Day 2

Our Warriors continued to have success in the pool on Sunday.

Ten-year-old Elayna Zunic brought home a Silver medal in the 50 Back and came 5th in the 100 Free.

Jessica Dreghici’s Bronze medal performance in the 200 IM qualified her for another OSC event while, in the 400 Free, she beat her own club record by 4s on her way to a 4th place finish.

Alex Rusu took home a Bronze medal with his 1:16.56 performance in the 100 Breast.

Willow Coburn and Merlyn Dong continued to add to their OYJ events with excellent performances in the 200 Back and 200 IM, while Evan Hodson met the OYJ cut for the 200 Fly.

Other notables were Top 8 finishes by Spencer Pirvu (5th in 200Bk), Quinlynn Logan (4th in 200IM) and the Girls 11&U Relay Team (6th in 4x50 Medley for Claire Qin, Elayna Zunic, Sarah Coffin and Quinlynn Logan).
