CW at 2018 Canadian Junior Championships

2018 Canadian JuniorsThe 2018 Canadian Junior Championships got under way in Winnipeg on Wednesday, July 25, 2018. Sixteen Warriors qualified to compete in this prestigious 6-day competition showcasing the very best young athletes in Canada. CBC's live stream coverage of the Prelims begins at 10:00 am and the Finals at 6:30 pm (KW-time) each day.

Prelims Highlights & Unofficial Results of Finals

Day 1 (Jul 25)

2018 Canadian JuniorsA great start for CW! After the Prelim session, Kelton Langman and Ian Friesen advanced to the A Finals in the Boys 14-15 100m Butterfly while Tyler Bell qualified to swim in the A Finals in the Boys 14-15 200m Backstroke. Ian Friesen will also swim in the Fastest Heat Finals of the 800m Freestyle this evening -- he is ranked 2nd in this event.

Thirteen-year-old Haley Thomas placed 17th in the Girls 13-14 100m Butterfly prelims, coming just .06s short of the 16th place finisher. She advanced to the B Finals, nonetheless. Also notable was Avery Willis who matched her entry time and placed 19th in the Girls 15-17 100m Butterfly. Well done, girls!

In the Mixed 13-18 400m Freestyle Relay, our young team of 14-15 year olds placed strong,  coming 18th out of 35 teams. Way to go Quitze, Avery, Grace and Ian!

Later this evening, we saw some fine performances from our A/B Finalists, including CW's first medal by our freestyle-powerhouse, Ian Friesen. Below are the unofficial results:

Day 2 (Jul 26)

After this morning's Preliminary rounds, Ian Friesen and Canek Bracho moved on to the 100m Freestyle A & B Finals, respectively. Congrats boys and also to CJC rookie, Quitze Bracho, who delivered a great performance in the Boys 14-15 100m Freestyle prelims with a personal best time of 56.43.

CW gathered several more personal best times in the afternoon Time Trials. Congratulations, Sarah Chapman, Grace Payne, Ben Cameron, Fergus Park and Andres Paz!

In the evening A & B Finals, our Warrior boys continued to make us proud with a 5th and 12th place finish for Ian and Canek in their respective age groups:

Day 3 (Jul 27)

CW had a fantastic morning in the Prelims today! Haley Thomas and Kelton Langman fought their way for spots in the B Finals of the 200m Butterfly. Haley dropped her entry time by 2.23s and set a personal best of 2:29.98 while Kelton dropped 1.76s and clocked in a personal best of 2:13.90. Also advancing to the Finals are Fergus Park in the 100Breast and Nathan Landry and Avery Willis in the 200Fly. Kudos also to Andres Paz who set a personal best in the 200m Butterfly.

Five Warriors racked up more points for CW in the Finals this evening. Congrats to Avery Willis on an impressive 5th place finish in the 200m Butterfly! Also notable was Haley Thomas' amazing performance in the 200Fly, shaving yet another 1.7s off her best time, as well as Nathan Landry's club record breaking swim in the 200Fly.  Here are the unofficial results:

Day 4 (Jul 28)

Three Warriors qualified for today's Finals. Ian Friesen placed 3rd in the Prelims and will swim in the A Finals of the 200m Freestyle while Keiran Stone will swim in the B Finals. In the 400m Breaststroke, Andres Paz (who was seeded 21st coming into the Prelims) soared past the competition and secured 7th spot in the A Finals with a personal best time of 2:31.95.

Another highlight of the afternoon was Tyler Bell's fantastic swim in the 1500m Freestyle. Tyler dropped 9.30s and earned a personal best time of 16:58.77, moving up the rankings from 21st to 17th.

Congrats also to 15-year-old Sophie Richard who swam her 100m Freestyle Time Trial at a blistering pace of 58.53, a personal best and only 0.3 seconds off the Girls 15-17 Club Warriors record!

It was an exciting 200m Freestyle Finals. Ian Friesen went head to head with top-seeded Cole Pratt in the final leg of the race and finished with a Silver, his second medal in the competition! Ian would later swim in the 1500m Freestyle Fastest Heat Finals, finishing 13th overall. Here are the unofficial results:

At the end of Day 4, Club Warriors still sits in 16th position. Well done, team!


Day 5 (Jul 29)

We saw two Warriors qualify for the Finals this morning: Canek Bracho will swim in the 50Free B Finals and Ian Friesen in the 400Free A Finals. Fourteen-year-old Quitze Bracho had another strong swim in the Prelims and set a personal best in the Boys 14-15 50m Freestyle with a time of 25.83.

In the Time Trials, Grace Payne swam a personal best time of 2:16.94 in the 200m Freestyle  while Andres Paz bettered his entry time by 2.12s in the 200m Individual Medley with a time of 2:21.88!

The evening Finals proved to be an exciting one for Club Warriors. Sixteen-year-old Canek Bracho put in a tremendous performance, winning the Men's 16-18 50m Free B Finals. His time of 24.27 was just 0.06s shy of his own CW club record!

To close off the evening, in a thrilling Men's 14-15 400m Freestyle race to the wall, Ian Friesen edged out Alexander Axion by .22s and claimed GOLD!! Way to go, CW!

Day 6 (Jul 30)

We did not have swimmers competing in the Open Water events today.

The Canadian Junior Championships wrapped up with Club Warriors placing 16th overall out of over 140 swim clubs! This is a fantastic accomplishment for our young team of mostly 15 years and under athletes competing at the most anticipated championship event in Canada for 18 and under swimmers.

Way to represent Club Warriors. We are so proud of ALL of you!!
