Western Region Short Course Championships
February 2-4, 2018

On February 2nd, 70 CW swimmers between the ages of 9 and 16 travelled to London for the Western Region Short Course Swimming Championships. This was a 2 ½ day swimming extravaganza! This event was held at the London Canada Games Aquatic Center where the parents fought for a place to park their cars and themselves so they could cheer on the club. The host club, “London Aquatic Club,” took the overall Team Title, with the clubs from Guelph and Golden Horseshoe coming in second and third respectively. The Warriors took fourth place out of 28 teams. What an amazing achievement team!

Elite/Jr. Elite Meet Report

For the Elite and Jr. Elite groups, the Regional Championship had different purposes. Some swimmers were competing in their Seasonal Championship meet. Some swimmers were trying to qualify for the Age Group Provincial Championships in March and finally some swimmers were using the meet as a tune up for Provincials.

Jaelyn Hall had a great meet, narrowly missing her Provincial Cuts but in the process picked up the Gold in the 800 Free, Silver in the 400 Free and Bronze in the 200 Free. Ben Chandler did make his Provincial Standard in the 800 Free on his way to snatching up the Silver Medal. Tyler Bell swam an impressive 2:00 in the 200 Free, winning the Gold and attaining his Provincial Standard in that event. Emily Masters was the best in the 100 Fly winning the Gold and making her Provincial qualifying time.

Age Group 3-4 Meet Report

For AG4, this was a breakthrough meet for Filip Ardelean and Natalie Rondilla, swimming to 100% best times and several podium finishes. Tara Wong and Kaitlin Marton also swam to 90%+ best times and confirmed they are on the road to success at the upcoming Festival meet.

A big congratulation to Kieran Stewart on her first Provincial qualifying time in winning the 13 year 200 breaststroke.

Overall the group swam to 71% best times (71/100). Jessica, Cristian, Zeyi and Konrad stood out for AG3 with terrific overall results, while some AG3 swimmers battled flu symptoms along with Coach Ken.

Next up, Festivals and the Waterloo Region Cup.

Both the swimmers and Coach Ken are looking forward to feeling better with some rest and fine tuning leading in to the next phase of racing.

Age Group 1-2 Meet Report

Coach Allison was impressed with everyone who participated in this meet "All swimmers did best times!!"

Congratulations to Spencer Pirvu, Quinlynn Logan and Merlyn Dong who each qualified for an extra Festival event.

Also notable were the relay performances by our 10 & Under swimmers. Two teams of boys came 1st and 8th in the 200 Free Relay and 2nd in the Medley Relay, while the girls finished 2nd in the 200 Free Relay and 3rd in the Medley Relay!

Individual medalists were Spencer Pirvu, Quinlynn Logan, Merlyn Dong and Alex Rusu. A shout out to Michael Yarusevych for competing in his first meet as an 11-year-old and stepping up to get 2 ribbons.
